StitchXplorations - Satin Stitch

This is again one more attempt at satin stitch from the same sampler done long time back.
The background is unbleached cotton fabric. I have used a shaded cotton thread, 2 strands. I have outline some petals with back stitch to see how it looks. The leaves and stalk, stem have been done in satin stitch.

I have not filled in the center. I think s few french knots would look nice. I will try them.

What do you think?

StichXplorations-Satin Stitch

This is a very old sampler. This was my attempt at satin stitch. The stems and sepals of the buds are chain stitch. The center of the flower is diagonal stitch over satin stitch base.

The fabric used is unbleached heavy cotton. I used Neem zari thread; cotton thread with gold or zari thread.

This one time I got it perfect, as you can see below:

This is not my favorite stitch. Nine out of ten times, I cannot do this perfectly as I would like to. But I have improved over the years.  I need to practice this stitch  to improve my skills. But I keep on postponing it as this stitch is a strain on the eyes.

What do you say?

Satin Stitch-1

TAST-2012-Week 14-Satin Stitch

This weeks challenge is Satin Stitch. Please visit Sharon's site here:

Well, this is one of the stitches I m not comfortable with. Some how I feel my stitches are not that picture perfect no matter how much I try. I only take up small projects and very few at that as far as this stitch is concerned. And once they are over, I just feel relieved. ..I never had nor do have that much time as this stitch requires lots of concentration and time.

I think of learning it properly and practise it. But some how I always put it off.

I have found Mary Corbet's tips, tutorials and many instructions on this stitch so very useful and easy to understand. It answered many of my doubts. You also can visit the site here:

Hmm...I think I should make some time and learn this stitch properly.....Any way, here are some of my very old work. My mom also helped me in this. When ever I look at them, I don't believe that I have done them...well it could have been one of those rare moments...or my mom's guidance....

Below are the beautiful works from the artisans of Bengal:

Well watch out, I am going to try my hand and post something.......may be....:) :) :)....

Satin Stitch On Yellow Sari-II

Here are some more photos of the sari.
One of the motifs at the bottom edge of the sari.
These flower motifs in blue and orange are scattered all over the sari. They have also been embroidered  on pallu between the vines of floral motifs as you can see below.
Here is a look at pallu where the embroidery is heavy.
Another look at pallu
See the edge of pallu is scalloped and embroidered.

Keep a watch on my blog.

Satin Stitch On Yellow Sari-I

Here is another cotton sari from Bengal. Again it is fine cotton, looks like Organza and  lemon yellow in colour. It has floral vines and floral motifs embroidered in Satin Stitch and stem stitch. I love the way the artisans have embroidered it.

Here are some shots of it.
This is as border on the bottom edge of the sari. The motifs are through out the edge. I loved the combination of shaded orange, leaf green and shaded blue coloured threads. The back ground being lemon yellow it is looking very bright and sunny.

The threads are coarse cotton and stranded. They seem to  be hand dyed and all the six strands have been used.
Here is a closer look at one of the the motif-or rather part of it.
Here is the pallu where the embroidery is a bit heavy.
Here is a closer  look at one of the motives.
A closer look at the embroidery.

More to come in my next post....So watch out.....
