Hi friends...with the TAST Challenge and some other things both at home and work front I am busy these days. I am enjoying TAST challenge. I wish I had more time for exploring the stitches. Any way, I can always note down my ideas and explore them later.

With Republic day and Ratha Saptami approaching, I need to create some Rangolis for the occasion. I love creating new ones for each occasion....I don't have much time for my other projects. they are unfinished and need to be finished..May be this week end I can do something....

TAST-2012-3rd Week-Feather Stitch

Feather Stitch in combination with different Stitches

Feather Stitch with detached chain. This gives the affect of wheat ears, grasss etc.

The first one is with French knots, the second- beads and the last one with Bullion Stitches. You should forgive me for my bullion Stitches. I was too lazy to pull out my needles suitable for these and even then I have not perfected this stitch.

Hi friends. Finally our biggest festival Sankranti is over. It had been very hectic for the past few weeks. Starting from Dushera, festivals and other religious occasions come one after the other. Dushera Diwali, New Year, Dhanurmaasam where one has to observe all rituals including the drawing of Rangoli for a month finally our Sankranti festival. This means lot of preparations at home, cooking huge quantities, spring cleaning our homes and surroundings, refurnishing and refurbishing, visiting temples..

To top it all we have a steady flow of friends and relatives dropping in at all times, going out with them to visit places and temples, picnicking, shopping. It is fun to bond with them, some times with those we have not seen for long. We also have some marriages and other such functions during this period. If it involves our close friends or relatives, we have more work on our hands.

But juggling, all this and work is a real headache and tiring. Everything goes haywire. And the icing of the cake is that children have holidays during this period. They keep on playing with their friends, don't bother to study, or complete their assignments and projects and keep barging in for snacks and drinks..Phew

Now every one is back to their schedule. At least that gives us some breathing space. I feel tired and need to rest. Funny but true that holidays are very tiring and we don't get any rest.

Till now I had to concentrate on Rangoli designs. I am happy that I could create some very beautiful ones and have noted down so many ideas for new ones. But I need a break from them.

I now need to concentrate on other things. TAST 2012 has already begun. I started some doodling on the stitches but could not come out with much. Now I need to strictly follow the challenge.

I will also post Mirror Work Tutorials. I just din't have time for anything else during these past weeks. I am also planing to finish my on hand projects and also have some new ones lined up...let us see... by this week end I will organise everything properly.

Sankranti Special

25 dots-3 rows in center, 23, 21,.....to 3 dots-straight dots ie., one placed below another. This Rangoli reflects the spirit of the festival.

The clay pots with Pongal(a rice preparation), which is prepared sweet and spicy separately and the recipes vary from house to house. It is then offered to God.

Kites-which are flown during this period mostly in North India and some parts of our state as the winds are favourable for kite flying,

Gobbillu-cow dung shaped into pyramids and decorated with pumpkin flowers, vermilion and turmeric are placed on the Rangolis in the morning and evening for the entire month of Dhanurmaasam and worshipped as Goddess Gauri. Young girls worship her and request for a good husband and happy life. The young girls of the neighbourhood visit all the houses worshipping these Gobbillu. They also sing songs known as Gobbi Paatalu (songs of Gobbillu), while circumbulating the Gobbillu, either clapping hands or with kolatam sticks. These songs are folk songs handed down over generations from the ladies of the house to their girl child. They contain praise of Goddess Gauri, and also requests for what type of husband they want.

Sugarcane-the green ones you can see reflects that new crop has arrived at the households in the villages. This is basically a harvest festival or agricultural festival celebrating harvest as well as the Sun entering the Zodiac sign of Capricorn.

In the center you can see the logs and the fire. This being winter season at its peak, huge bonfires are lit on the first day of the festival known as Bhogi. All the old and unused clutter is cleared from the houses and burnt. Huge logs are placed in the cross roads of the villages, towns or cities and burnt. It is where children, men and women gather together to celebrate.

The star of David or the Sri Chakra I have drawn represents the festival of Rangolis drawn each day morning and evening reverently for a month. This festival is festival of Rangolis too....

Ratham Muggulu

These are the traditional Ratham or Chariot Rangolis, drawn on 3rd and 4th day of the Sankranti festival. on 3rd day the Ratham is drawn towards the house-i.e Lord is entering the house. On fourth day it is drawn going out-send off to Lord.

This is the time(whole month before Sankranti) when the local deities of the temples are brought out of temples, fully decked in fabulous and rich silks, jewellery made of gold and precious gems and decorated with flowers are paraded on chariots enabling all those people who cannot go to temples for various reasons, a glimpse of Lord. They are accompanied by the horses, elephants or other such things owned by the Deities(temples), artists performing various acts and traditional arts, musicians singing, dancers dancing with much pomp and show.

When the deities are paraded every one comes out to pray and catch a glimpse. Ladies come out with offerings of flowers, fruits, coconut, turmeric, vermilion, beetle leaves and nut powder, some money etc. they light camphor and give aarati to the deities. Every one is then blessed by the priests. It is some thing to be seen. I miss the small town/village life where the festivals used to be celebrated with much enthusiasm.

The 4 lines in orange colour are drawn first and form the base. Then they are joined(green lines).

This is the simplest form-one tier chariot.

This is two tier chariot with 3 cells or rooms

Slightly varied form of joining the lines.

This is 3 tiered one with 6 cells.

Actually in towns and villages where one has huge front yards, huge chariots are drawn with many tiers and cells. The bigger the more appreciation from friends and neighbours. I will try to post more complicated ones and other types of Ratham drawn with dots, free hand etc.

It is a bit difficult to draw these Rangolis, which are drawn with the help of lines. I have tried to give you the steps for basic Rangoli here:

Step 1: Draw 4 parallel lines vertically.

Step 2: Draw four parallel lines horizontally at right angle to the vertical ones, crossing them and passing through the center.

Step 3: Draw cross lines as shown above.

Final Step: One can draw pumpkins and sugar canes as above or paddy ears as below

Nela Muggulu

In the series of Nela muggulu or the Rangolis drawn especially during the month preceding Sankranti(Pongal) festival in Andhra Pradesh, her is one more. These Rangolis are drawn free hand. The base or starting point for these Rangolis are lines.They can be 2, 3, usually 4 lines.

The orange lines in the center are drawn first. This is Swastika an auspicious symbol representing Lord Ganesh. The rest of the lines were drawn around it. Well this small motif of swastika can be drawn into a very big Rangoli by adding design on all sides.

Some times, these Rangolis of lines drawn in the center are surrounded by chain Rangolis or other dot Rangolis depending upon the skill and creativity of the person drawing it.

Hi there. Yesterday I was too tired. I am down with some allergy, which had made me rest less and the medicines make me very drowsy. I could not even sit properly for a few minutes. Any way here it is- another pattern.

This is from my morning news paper, on children's page for colouring. But when I looked at it, I found it interesting. When I look at something, I always visualise the image or words I read. In this case, I thought that the bigger bird as mother and smaller one as daughter. The mother is trying to teacher her flying. I love the way they are sitting on the branch amongst the leaves and flowers. It gives such a beautiful cosy and rosy feeling.

This pattern would be apt for, greeting cards, children's dresses, cushion covers, hanky, pillow covers, table cloths, kitchen linen like hand towels, table mats etc. One can paint it with fabric paints or embroider it. Running stitch, stem stitch, chain stitch, satin stitch or long and short stitch can be used. The flowers can be done in French or colonial knots or beads.

Thanks a lot for encouraging me. Without your suggestions and motivation, I would not have come this far.

I have made some New Year resolutions as usual! I don't know how many I can really put into practise. I think this year I have more chances of adhering to them.

I want to be more creative, spend more time with my family, my friends and you. That means, organising all things in my life and following time management techniques...take care of my health, eat well, concentrate on mental and physical health...relax..stop worrying about everything..I am badly burnt out...and need lot of rest....
Need to complete lots of pending projects...:) :) which seem to keep on piling up day after day.....
Take care of my garden...I need to do a lot there
Improve my communications...I sort of withdrew my self into my shell like a crab...

I think that sums up most of the things I want to do...I am yet to chart out my to do and not to do lists...Any suggestions???????

Well I am excited about TAST 2012 and have lots of my own ideas to be given a shape on the creative side...

Pongal Special

This Rangoli is known as Pongali Kundalu. Pongali means rice dish. Kundalu means pots.

The sweet variety is known as Chakkera Pongali where milk, jaggery and rice are boiled together and ghee and dry fruits are added.

The spicy one known as Pongali, has rice, split green gram and spices.

The sweet one is cooked by all the South Indians on Sankranti day-the day Sun enters the Capricorn. This rice dish is offered to Sun God, cooked in new clay pot and on wood fire. Its taste is something which has to be experienced.

For this Rangoli, the dots to be placed are:

23 dots in center row,

21 dots--2 rows on either side

leaving 5 dots on each side, 11 dots 3 times

5 dots 5 times

then 1 dot

Here are some more of the Rangolis drawn specially during the month of Dhanur Maasam.

This one is a Chakra meaning wheel. The Criss Cross lines in purple colour form the basis for the design. I have used only double lines. 3 or 4 are also used. See below.

This is a Kurma meaning a tortoise. See how the 4 criss cross lines in black have been placed and then joined(orange colour) to form the figure.

Both Chakra and Kurma are associated with our mythology. It is also a fact that women drew every day things in their Rangolis.

Friends this is my 150th post in Rangolis. I am really happy to have shared with you many Rangolis regularly. I will try to post more often and also cover other aspects of Rangolis as well as other forms of Rangolis. Hope you keep on encouraging me with your suggestions and comments.

Merry Christmas to all of you!

Friends this is my 500th post.

When I look back, I feel the journey so far had many highs and lows, ups and downs, tears and laughter....I started my blog with so many ambitions and hopes. I could not achieve them all. Because there was so much I wanted to do and so much to share. I am sort of disappointed because due to my busy life, I have very little time for my hobbies or other activities and could not concentrate much on my blog.

Well I am an optimist and hope to carry out all my plans in future or at least try my best. It is one of my resolutions for the New Year too. Already I have been more active on my blog than before. I need to be more regular, consistent and keep up with my promises...:) I will...

Friday-Free Patterns

Hi Friends Sorry for posting my free pattern late. I am down with some bug and recovering. So here is the pattern:

This pattern is good for fabric painting. This can be used for Mirror work and or Bead work as well as Kundan work. I feel chain stitch, running stitch, stem stitch, satin stitch, detached chain, herring bone, French knots can be used.

This is the Astadala Padmam or 8 petalled lotus- a simple version.

This is also another version of 8 petalled Lotus, used on auspicious occasions like Pooja. You can see the tiny feet of Goddess Lakshmi.

This is also drawn during the Dhanurmaasam. This Rangoli is drawn free hand or with the help of lines and not dots. I have used only two lines. But this is drawn with 4 lines, which makes it more beautiful. This has many variations. I have posted only one. I will try to update with other variations.

Join as shown above.

If you space out the dots, you can create a bigger Rangoli. That is the trick with which one can make even a small Rangoli look big. The only thing is the spacing of dots should be even and symmetrical.

You can colour the back ground with a contrast colour. I have just coloured the edges light yellow. But you can fill up the entire back ground. Only thing is it will take lots of time.

Nela Muggulu

Some more of Nela Muggulu. These are all drawn using lines, no dots at all.

This is known as Daarula Muggu or Pathways. This is drawn on the eve of Sankranti festival and also on festival day. Path ways means showing the path to Lord to enter into our homes. Some paths are kept open and some closed.

This is only a single block and only one variety I have drawn here. This Rangoli is actually drawn bigger according the size of the front yard. It will have many blocks of such path ways which are complicatedly meshed together. They are very intricate, difficult to draw but very beautiful to look at. These Rangolis require lot of intelligence, patience and skill to draw. But very beautiful to look at.

I will try to post other varieties and more bigger ones.

My request to all those who happen to see this post is, kindly mail me photos or drawings of such type of Rangolis and any details known about them please. I am trying to save these for the next generations.

Nela Muggulu

Nela Muggulu means those Rangolis which are specially drawn during the auspicious month of Dhanurmasam-that is the month before the festival of Sankranti or Pongal. Sankranti is an agricultural festival, celebrating thanks giving to Sun God, for the bountiful agricultural produce. This is also the month when Lord Vishnu is worshipped.

The Rangolis drawn during this month are special, meant for Thanking Sun God and also for praying to Lord Vishnu. These are drawn using lines (no dots) and are peculiar to Andhra State. The people of Krishna Guntur, Prakasam and especially Coastal districts draw these designs. But now these are all disappearing and only modern Rangolis with dots are being drawn.

The leaves denote the crop or agricultural produce.

These are pumpkins, a favourite of our state.

These denote the Paddy Ears.

There are many more like these which my maternal Grandmother used to draw. But alas! I could not note them down and now most of this type of Rangoli is disappearing.

Shisha (Mirror) Work-3

Frame Work Stitches-1

Mirrors or Shisha used for embroidery or decoration on fabrics do not have holes. Similarly some Paillettes also do not have holes. In such cases we need fasten them and hold them on to the fabric by using a frame work of stitches.

For Paillettes, the basic frame work of stitches are enough to hold them as they are not heavy. Care should be taken to do these stitches neatly and precisely.

In case of mirrors, we need to encase the sharp/irregular edges in stitches, so that it will not slip out of the stitches, as the bigger ones are more heavier, the edges harm the fabric as well as our hands while washing them. For this one has to stitch around the mirrors, over the basic frame work of stitches.

There are many ways of stitching the basic frame work stitches which hold the Shisha to the fabric. These stitches depend upon the shape of the mirror, size, ground fabric and thread used. Similarly, there are variety of stitches made over the basic frame work stitches to cover the edges. Apart from this one can use many stitches, and other materials to adorn Shisha work to make it more attractive.

As far as our Indian Embroidery is concerned, there are some Shisha Stitches used in the Banjara Embroidery (Banjara-Gypsies of India) and embroideries from Gujarat(Kutch, Ahir), Rajasthan and others. Usually wool, cotton or silk floss was used which were hand dyed (in earlier days). The fabric used was mostly cotton. Now commercial embroidery threads and other fabrics are being used for commercial productions.

OK here we go now on the journey of exploring the stitches....

Some Tips Before We Start:

Use cotton threads and cotton or jute fabric for practising
Stick the mirror or the paillette to the fabric with fabric glue. This way it is easier to handle
Work with Paillettes first
Use embroidery, frames or hoops

Frame Work Stitches For Round Shaped Shishas or Paillettes:

There are many ways to hold the Shisha on to the fabric. Some are traditional, some modern.

1. Star Stitch: Here four straight stitches are used for holding the Shisha. This is actually star stitch. I have used a Paillette.

After sticking the shisha to the fabric, bring out thread on to the surface of the fabric. Stich from A to B, C to D, E to F and G to H, pulling thread tight enough to hold the Shisha. One can use more stitches in between these to secure it more. Different colours, weights or varieties of threads can be used for interesting effect. I used pearl cotton.

For Paillettes and shishas with smooth edges, we can leave it there. But if the shisha is heavy and edges are not smooth, we may have to add stitches for covering the edges. That I will post in subsequent posts.

Shapes And Sizes

So let us start with the sizes and shapes of the Shisha.

Here you can see the various shapes and sizes of the mirrors or shisha available. Circular or round shaped, square, diamond and triangular shaped ones are the popular ones. You can also see the rare forms of crescent and eye shaped shishas.

Tiny mirrors in melon seed shapes are also available, but not shown here.

These are the round ones I have. You can see some of them have irregular edges. Machine cut ones have perfect shapes and edges.

Here you can see the back side. These are perfectly cut by machines and of good quality, hence costlier.

These are square and diamond ones.

These are all encased in thin metal sheets to protect the edges of the mirrors as well as for safety. They can be stitched without removing the covers or after removing the covers.

These are the paillettes which are like sequins, light weight and available in round square, diamond, oval and seed shapes. If these have holes(one of two) it is easy to attach. If not, one has to attach them like shishas. These days these are more popular because of their light weight and also safe as compared to real shishas.

These (Shishas)are sold by weight(in case of smaller sizes) or in boxes and in pieces, if they are big. Paillettes are sold by weight.

Dhanurmasam starts from 16th of this month. This is an auspicious month for praying to lord Vishnu-specially through Rangolis. This will culminate with the three day festival of Sankranti. Sankranti, is an agricultural festival, thanks giving to Sun God for the bountiful crops that are harvested at this time and the brought home. But unlike all other festivals this festival also known as Pongal festival has a special place for Rangolis. Well more about all this later.

We have to gear up all our old Rangolis, notebooks, papers, paper cuttings containing Rangolis and also create something new, which we do every time. Well here we go:

Shisha( Mirror) Work-1

INTRODUCTION

Shisha is a Persian word later on adopted by Hindi or Urdu languages. the word "Shisha" means glass and mirror. Shisha work or embroidery using mirrors is perhaps unique to India (Indian sub continent). It is said that this type of embroidery was introduced by the Mughal from Persia when they occupied Indian sub continent.

Where the Royalty and rich had gold, silver and precious gems to add richness and glitter to their clothes, the common folk used mirrors or shisha for adorning their cloths. They were affordable, easy to stitch on to the clothes, shimmered like stars in the sky and added beauty to their clothes. It was also believed that the light reflected by Shisha would ward of evil spirits. So, Shisha Work was the forte of Folk Embroideries of India, practised by the Banjaras(Gypsies of India). The embroideries from Gujarath and Rajasthan use this work.

At first pieces of mica were used. Later on glass was blown into a globe like shape and broken to get the pieces. These pieces which were uneven and had slight curvatures were used. Now pieces of mirrors perfectly cut on machines in various shapes are used.

The Shisha work slowly made its way on to the blouses, kurthas (tunics), lehenga (long skirts), saris, worn by girls and young women and also on bags, purses, cushion covers etc. Actually the skirts of Banjara women and women from Gujarath and Rajasthan and also their blouses have heavily embroidered Shisha work. But this was scaled down to suit the modern needs and was a huge hit in early 70s to 80s. Even today this embroidery is well appreciated.

Shisha Work in combination with Kutch Work or appliqué work was quite popular in India. In the present times, with the growing appreciation for ethnic art, hand made goods, embroideries of India have again caught the eyes of the fashion designers as well the end users. Today instead of glass mirrors, paillettes are being used, which are light weight.

So here is my attempt to bring out a series of posts on Shisha work and the stitches used in it some of which I have learnt from my family, friends and some of my own experiments. I promised to do these tutorials for my very dearest friend Dee a long time back but somehow could not. These posts are dedicated to Dee

I will also try to post some patterns and my sampler as I make it.

This weeks pattern:

This again is a motif for crewel work. Crewel work in India is known as Aari work-the chain stitch embroidery done with a hook known as Aari. In this type of embroidery, mostly wool is used (in Kashmir) and silk or cotton threads in other places. It can also be done by ordinary needle but the stitch with Aari is more fine and beautiful.

The above motif is inspired by the designs from Kashmir.

Satin Stitch and Running Stitch or Kanta Stitch Herring Bone Stitch, French Knots can also be used.

Gopuram Stitch Update-Part III

Bead and Cowrie Embroidery

This is my niece's skirt:

This is known as Lehenga. It is full length, A line, made of Blue coloured Cheese Cotton cloth which has been treated with acid wash.

It has red coloured poplin piping at the bottom and also at the waist. A strip of cotton zari border in red colour has been stitched in V shape at the top and at the bottom to add a bit of sparkle.

The embroidery is entirely of chain stitch with black black and red Neem Zari thread. That is the cotton thread which has zari (gold) thread in it. Sequins, white seed beads and cut glass beads, kaudi(cowrie) shells have also been used.

This is the back side.

This is the blouse. Here paillettes with holes have been used. You can also see drop shaped plastic beads in white colour.

Threshold Art-2

Just to jog your memory..

Now a days turmeric and vermilion have been replaced by paints. Who wants to scrub their thresholds every week and apply turmeric and vermilion especially those living in cities who don't have even time to breathe. More over getting it painted is almost a permanent solution, needs repaint once in 5 or 10 years. Still the art of decorating is very creative.

Here is an example:

This is the main threshold of an old traditional house in the coastal region. See the design of the flowers and the leaves. See the hibiscus flowers placed in the corner worshipping the threshold.

See the scenery in the center. The paint has peeled off a little. But we can still make out the scenery. Blue mountains in the distance, orange and yellows of the sky denoting the sun rise, birds flying on their way to start their day. We can also make out a house with slanting roof. These are tiled roofs (terracotta tiles) which is quite common in the region. The house is situated on the banks of a river. The most common tree is coconut. So the artist has added a few of them along with a boat in the water. The artist had captured the essence of the local region with just a few strokes.

I wish the scenery had not peeled off. It brought back memories of my child hood, my roots, my maternal grandma's house and so much more when I visited the house.....I will share those moments with you in some other posts....

Oh by the way can you share with me any pictures of threshold art of your homes, if you have anything different? Send those pictures via email with a little description about it...We all would be very glad to see them please.....

Gopuram Stitch Tutorials-Part II

My first part was only the basics. My grand mother taught me these flowers. If I remember correctly, these flowers were stitched with a white thread (coarse cotton yarns) on her velvet blouses usually of dark colours. The flowers had 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 petals with a mirror in the center or sometimes a chain stitch or French knots or satin stitch in the center of the flower. These were used as motifs on the back, around the neck and hem of the sleeves. They were also worked on pillow covers(minus the mirrors) and cloth bags, door curtains etc.

I learnt them from her much later. Here are some samples I worked out:

Here I have anchored the last stitch with French knots and bullion stitch. Sorry my bullion stitch are not state of art work especially when I am working with wide eyed needles :) :).

Kundan Ear Rings

Kundan Jhumkis or danglers are in fashion now. They are available in many colours.I picked up Red and Golden Yellow as they will match any silk or other brocade saris. These are looking stunning.

I also picked up blue coloured one but gave it off to my sister. I will take a snap of it if possible and post it some time. I could not lay my hands on green set though. Before I could pick it up, some one else snooped on it ...:) :) perhaps better luck next time.

I picked up smaller ones. actually these days huge and heavy danglers in many shapes glittering with stones are in fashion. They are too heavy, meant for party wear and I don't like to look so decked up. Since they are heavy, one has to use chains to support them. So I picked up simple and small ones which also cost very less.

Gopuram Stitch Tutorials

Friends, I was going through some of my very old doodling clothes on which I used to practise my embroidery stitches learnt from various sources and came across this stitch.

I have learnt many from my maternal Grandma. In her childhood she studied in a school run by nuns. Such schools were called as Convents by the local people. My Gran was very proud of having studied there. Her English was impeccable. Well she learnt embroidery, crochet, sewing etc in her school. She had a very good knowledge of embroidery stitches not only the Indian ones but also those from across the world.We grand children used to sit with her and talk about her school days. We also used to learn embroidery and crochet from her. She had good memory and even after 70 years or so, she could tell us the name of the stitch both in English and local language. But alas at that time I never bothered to note down those names.

Here is one of the stitches I learned from her. She named it as Gopuram Stitch. Gopuram means Temple dome. She was not sure from where she learned this nor the name of the stitch. When she taught me I remarked that this stitch reminded me of a temple dome-so we named it as Gopuram stitch. We used to (re)name many stitches to remember them easily--:)...:)...

If any one knows about the origin or name or any other information about this stitch, please let me know. I have not come across any similar stitch so far. Though it looks like an inverted Feather Stitch.

I have tried to put it down properly for you as tutorials:

The stitch belongs to Chain Stitch or Looped Stitches family. It can be stitched on any fabric-that is this is not a counted thread stitch.

STEP-1

This is how the stitch goes. I have marked the points for illustrative purpose. When we actually stitch we need no marking.

Bring out the needle up through the fabric from underside at point 'A'.

Now insert the needle at 'B' a little away from 'A', going under the fabric and come out at 'C'. Loop the thread from left to right from under the needle forming a loop. Now pull the needle to get the first stitch or loop.

This is almost like a chain stitch, except that that in chain stitch we insert needle at A where as here we leave some space in between.

Similarly make another loop from 'F' to 'G'.

Now again make a loop by entering at 'D' a little away from 'B' and coming out at 'E'.

STEP-Final

Anchor with a little straight stitch at 'H'. We have completed the basic part of the stitch. it should look like this one as shown below.

SOME TIPS:

The points A, B, D and F should be equidistant from each other. I have put more space between points, A,B,D and F (Fig-6)so that the stitch is clear to you.

Similarly points C, E, G and H should also be equidistant from each other.

Also notice that point 'C' should be a little to the right of A and so on and not mid point of A and B. That is the original stitch taught to me (a part of it).

Actually there is more to the stitch I learnt. I will be posting it in my next post.

Here I have tried to vary the stitch for my sampler.

In the stitch at 4, I have placed points C, E, G and H as mid point of A-B, A-D and so on. In 5, I have placed them to (almost) right side.

I have used beads (2) and cut glass beads (3). In 4 above I have anchored the stitch with a chain stitch.

Here the stitches shown at 1,2 and 3 are not correct. I was just practising on a doodle cloth before I got it correct at 4. See 8 and 9, I was trying to build up a pattern.

BEST SUITED FOR:

As a border around the necks, sleeves and hems of blouses, kurtis or tunics, skirts for decorating CQ blocks and on pillows, cushion covers, saris etc.

I am still practising the stitch and trying to build up a sampler. The best part is yet to come. So watch out for more...

Meenakari Ear Rings

Of late I have been following the latest fads and fashions in jewellery as I am creating some pieces my self. I am really fascinated by the variety our Indian markets offer us. These range from antique designs to the most latest and modern pieces. One of them I love is Meenakari or enamelled jewellery. These are enamel paint on metal surface-not too costly but very beautiful. Here are some I just could not resist picking up:

Look at these above. They have tiny hibiscus flowers on the corners-red and blue with green leaves in the between. You can see the small pearls and the kundan drops dangling below.

Here is one in maroon red.

I just could not resist these beautiful ear rings. But I am yet to get matching necklace to wear with them. This always happens with me as I pick up individual pieces and try to make a set out of them. It takes a long time and patience and also a very good memory to scour the markets, exhibitions/sales to find the pieces to make an entire set with in the budget.

Learning Banjara embroidery

Hi guys. I am recovering my strength slowly. So I have started slowly going through my stash of paper cuttings, books, craft supplies and what not. There is a lot to go through, organise, classify and properly store them. You know every time I start doing that, after some time, I pick up some paper cuttings or a book and start leafing though them. I become engrossed in them so much that I forget what I am doing...:). It happens every time no matter how strict I try to be. So I never ever finish sorting them. That is a real problem.

Oh I am learning Banjara(Gypsy) Embroidery. Well I am very excited about it. But need to work a lot on that first

I have to work on my jewellery too as I have lots to do. Some coloured seed beads here:

Such beautiful colours . These beads are available in many colours. The cut ones are costly but look very beautiful as they reflect light and hence shine. But stringing them is quite different matter. I have many projects were I have readied my design and bought every thing required, but need to work on them. Let us see....

I have bought some very beautiful pendants along with Meenakari and some ceramic beads. ...So watch out for more on these things and may more.....

Dwadasi Special

Today is Dwadasi-means 12th day of the month. As per our Hindu Calender, the 12th day of month of Kaartika is celebrated as Chiluku Dwadasi or Ksheerabdi Dwadasi. Ksheera means milk and it is used in the ceremony observed today.

Today we worship Tulasi plant or Indian Basil along with the plant of Gooseberry, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. It is a ceremony which women perform for health prosperity and happiness of the family-starting with . We offer prayers in the morning and again in the evening. Earthenware lamps using ghee (clarified butter) of Cow. Lamps are also lit on Gooseberries. Like on Diwali day, we light as many lamps as possible and decorate our house and yards.

It is said that on this day Radha Rani observed this ceremony in Brindavan(or Vrindavan or Vraj a place where Lord Krishna spent his child hood) for Lord Krishna

In our homes we must have a Basil Plant in the back yard and every day women of the house offer prayers both morning and evening. It is kept in a specially constructed pot known as Brindavanam or Tulasikota.

This how its pot looks. One can draw this free hand design too. Actually 5 Rangolis of lotuses(shown below) has to be drawn in front of this pot.

My maternal Granny used to celebrate this ceremony with much fervour. There are many traditional Rangolis of Tulasi Kota or Brindavanam-the pot where Tulasi is planted and worshipped.
